Fourth of July weekend schedule released

There will be a full schedule of activities in Canton during the July 4 holiday weekend as the city will not only celebrate the Fourth of July but also America’s 250th Anniversary Celebration. City of Canton Marketing Director and Canton Visitors Bureau Director Austin Melton broke down the holiday schedule of events, scheduled for July 2-5 in conjunction with First Monday Weekend, during the regular monthly meeting of the Canton City Council June 16.

TxDOT project updates for the week of June 22

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning to conduct the following construction and maintenance work in Van Zandt County during the week of June 22. Please remember, work schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure, or other unforeseen issues.

VZC Historical Commission receives state recognition

davidb@vanzandtnews.com For the 17th consecutive year, the Van Zandt County Historical Commission has been recognized for their work by the Texas Historical Commission. During the regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court June 17, VZC Judge Andy Reese announced that the VZC Historical Commission had received the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) for 2025 by the state.

Fourth of July and America’s 250th Birthday Celebrations will start happening before July 4 in Van Zandt County as Van, Grand Saline, and Wills Point will be hosting holiday activities on Saturday, June 27. Canton will be hosting their downtown activities on Saturday, July 4.

VZC well represented at State Republican Convention

A number of delegates from Van Zandt County attended the 2026 Republican State Convention that was held last week in Houston. For me, it ranked as one of the best Republican State Conventions that I have attended.
The Republican State Convention was held in Houston last week which included a number of delegates from Van Zandt County. Business conducted during the state convention will be discussed during the next regular monthly meeting of the Republican Club of Van Zandt County (RCVZC) scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, June 22, at the VZC Farm Bureau Event Center in Canton.
