Correspondent Are you a fish eater? If so, what is your favorite freshwater fish? I posed this question on social media a couple of years ago and there was a smorgasbord of ‘favorites.’ I have eaten just about every species of freshwater fish and thoroughly enjoyed most, but I do have a few exceptions. Granted, who wouldn’t enjoy eating a golden crispy fried crappie fillet? I’ve always said that crappie is the fish that even those that don’t like fish enjoy.

Bobbi ‘Breanne’ Talbott of Wills Point traveled to Abilene June 4-13 to compete in the Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA) state finals. The state finals rodeo is an annual week-long event where high school students across Texas and surrounding states come and compete.

Huge shoutout to Edgewood Anglers and recent graduates Tyner Jistel and Terry Thompson. Tyner and Terry have fished with the Grand Saline High School Bass Anglers throughout their four years of high school, and they finished that chapter in a big way at the THSBA State Championship on Lake Texoma.

Wills Point High School Girls’Cross Country Coach Bobbie Lester has been named as the Class 4A, Region 3, Girls’ Cross Country Coach of the Year by the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA).

Jett Taylor of Grand Saline placed in two different events during the recent Class 3A State Track Meet in Austin. Taylor, who played quarterback in Grand Saline and will be playing college football at Navy, finished in second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.48 seconds.

The Grand Saline Indians are one win away from a trip to the Class 3A State Softball Championship Game with an overall record of 32-10. To get to the state title contest, they will have to defeat the 25-5 Coahoma Bulldogettes in a one-game playoff in the state semifinal round. The game against Coahoma was scheduled for a 6 p.m. start Saturday, May 23, in Graham. Results of the state semifinal contest were not available at press time. See next week’s issue for more information.

The Wills Point ISD Board of Trustees saw a changing of the guard May 11, welcoming two new board members following the conclusion of the May 2 election cycle. Prior to introducing the newest members of the board and administering the various oaths of office associated with the post-election process, the board opened its session with a special recognition for Tennis State Qualifiers Brooklyn Dixon and Wyatt Harper.

Several Van Zandt County varsity softball teams opened post-season play recently with matchups in the bi-district round of the state softball playoffs. The Canton Eaglettes faced Carthage in a best-of-three series that began April 23 at Tyler Legacy.

The Brantley Team at Re/Max Landmark in Canton has announced that the Fourth Annual Miracle Madness Basketball Tournament is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Canton Junior High School Gymnasium located on Athens Street.
