GSHSBA team wins ‘School Champions’ trophy
A number of Grand Saline High School Bass Association (GSHSBA) teams competed May 18, 19 at the Texas High School Bass Association (THSBA) State Championship Tournament at Lake Palestine. The GSHSBA had seven teams that qualified for the THSBA State Championship Tournament.
Rolland strikes gold at Regionals
Joseph Rolland of Wills Point High School captured first place in the Triple Jump at the Class 4A Regional Track Meet recently to earn a trip to next month’s Class 4A State Track Meet. His winning mark at the regional meet held at the University of North Texas in Denton was 47-4.
STATE BOUND
This past week at Van Zandt Country Club, the Canton Eaglettes golf team finished second at the Region II-4A tournament. The Eaglettes will qualify for the Class 4A State Golf Tournament May 6-7 at the Legends Course in Kingsland.
Seven fishing teams advancing to state
Seven teams will be advancing to the state fishing tournament with the Grand Saline High School Bass Association (GSHSBA) next month. “Lake Tawakoni wasn’t sharing its treasures with this tournament easily,” said a GSHSBA spokesperson.
Van’s Landry Jones named to All-State Team
Van senior Landry Jones was recently named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s All-State Girls Basketball Team for Class 4A. Jones was also named to the Class 1A-4A Legacy All-Star Team.
Van boys, girls compete well in Emory track meet
Van finished second in the boys’ division and placed fourth in the girls’ division March 21 at the Avon Rice Relays at Rains High School in Emory. The Vandal boys’ track team finished second out of 12 teams with 62 points.
Three VZC players named to All-Region Team
Three varsity girls’ basketball players in Van Zandt County were recently named to the Class 4A All-Region Team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Among those named to the team were Landry Jones of Van, Chloe Howe of Canton, and Allison Rickman of Canton.
Tiger varsity baseball team falls to Mabank, 11-0
A six-run sixth inning proved to be too much to overcome as the Wills Point Tiger varsity baseball team lost to Mabank, 11-0, March 19. Carson LaJone led the Tigers with one hit in two at bats.
Eaglettes shutout Wills Point, 8-0
In a battle of Van Zandt County rivals March 15, the Canton Eaglettes outlasted the visiting Wills Point Lady Tigers, 8-0, in Canton.
