Following a public hearing during its regular meeting Dec. 6, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a uniform speed limit of 35 MPH on most or all VZC maintained public roads in all The commissioners’ court also unanimously approved a 20 MPH speed limit on most or all VZC maintained roads ‘traversing urban districts/areas,’ primarily subdivisions, in all four VZC precincts as defined by the Texas Transportation Code.

The Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial held their annual ‘Turkey Shoot’ just before Thanksgiving. There were record breaking numbers and proceeds this year. Turkeys were donated by Brookshires and Walmart. The VZC 4-H Sharpshooters joined in on this year’s ‘Turkey Shoot’ and they were vital to the success of the event, according to a VZC Veterans Memorial spokesperson. The youth helped by making posters and displaying them, helping with safety around the area, resetting the targets, and even shooting turkeys. Club leaders were instrumental in collecting the fees and helping individuals handle the guns while maintaining a safe environment.

Monday, Dec. 11 is the deadline for all candidates filing to run for an office in VZC to get on the ballot for the March 5, 2024, Texas Primary Election.

Seniors and older adults did not seem to get the memo regarding inflation. As the world continues to navigate a cost-of-living increase, internal data from Bank of America indicates that Baby Boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) and Traditionalists (individuals born between 1928 and 1945) are spending more while younger generations are cutting back. Between May 2021 and May 2022, spending by Traditionalists increased by more than five percent while Baby Boomer spending rose by 2.2 percent. That uptick occurred while younger generations’ spending fell by 1.5 percent.

The AARP Driver Safety Program and the Van Zandt County/Sarah Norman Library will be sponsoring a driver safety class from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec.

The Republican Women of Van Zandt welcomed Debbie Brinkley, Director from Hope Pregnancy Center in Canton as the guest speaker at their November meeting. Brinkley provided information about the center, the programs offered, and the need for donations.
