Tigers turn back Mustangs, snap winless streak

The race for a spot in this year’s postseason is in full swing around Van Zandt County with the start of this year’s playoffs looming just over the horizon. Four local programs helped their respective cases last week as Edgewood, Grand Saline, Van and Wills Point all notched victories.

The Van Lady Vandals were a team on a mission throughout the early stages of District 16-4A play, entering last week with a 5-0 record heading into a matchup with rival Canton Sept. 30.

The hopes that any Van Zandt County football team might complete a perfect regular season officially came to an end last week as Grand Saline stormed back from an early deficit to hand Edgewood its first setback of the season. Elsewhere in Van Zandt County, Fruitvale celebrated homecoming night against Savoy, Van dominated chief rival Canton and Wills Point sat idle after five weeks of non-district play.

Rivalry week returns for county teams

An exciting 2022 football season was scheduled to get even more intense this week with several local teams scheduled to renew their respective rivalries. After years of separation brought about by the UIL’s redistricting decisions, the Edgewood Bulldogs were scheduled to once again lock horns with the Grand Saline Indians.
