The number of Van Zandt County football teams without a win this season dropped from three down to two last week as Fruitvale delivered its most impressive showing of the season in a district-opening win over Savoy. Wills Point and Grand Saline will look to pick up their first wins of the season when they hit the field against Quinlan Ford and Quitman respectively.

Runners representing both Edgewood and Grand Saline made their way to Commerce last week to compete at this year’s District 12-3A Meet. Commerce took the team title in the varsity boys division, finishing with a meet-best 15 total points.

The sixth week of high school football brought with it a mixed bag for county schools. Canton, Edgewood and Van each registered impressive wins while Fruitvale and Grand Saline each suffered setbacks. Things should get even more interesting in the weeks ahead with Canton, Fruitvale and Wills all starting district play Oct. 7-8 and Van set to kick off its district run Oct. 15.
