The defending Class 2A basketball state champion Martins Mill Lady Mustangs are off to another strong start in the 2024-25 basketball season as they captured first place in the first annual Martins Mill Jerry Daniel Basketball Invitational Tournament Nov. 21-23.

davidb@vanzandtnews.com At the beginning of the football state playoffs, four teams in Van Zandt County were in contention for potential state championships. After two weeks of post-season action, only one VZC team remains in the hunt as Coach Jared Moffatt’s Van Vandals have advanced to the Class 4A, Division 2, Regional Semifinals.

With a winning percentage of 72, Russell Atteberry of Edgewood is the winner of Football Contest #12, the final contest of the season, in the Van Zandt News. Atteberry will receive $50 in merchandise coupons redeemable at the participating merchants on the contest pages.

davidb@vanzandtnews.com Dreams of a possible state championship remained alive and well for three Van Zandt County football teams after capturing their bi-district titles Nov. 15.

Ty Rotan of Edgewood placed 41st out of 149 runners competing recently at the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet. He also ended his season with a personal record with a time of 17:06 at the state meet.
