As I reflect on my experience writing the articles and editorials for the Van Zandt County Readers’ Choice, I am struck by the profound sense of community I encountered. Through one-on-one conversations with local business owners and community members, I discovered a deep sense of connection that binds our county together, one that transcends the boundaries of small towns.

Town Hall Meeting scheduled for Monday night in Edom

Van Zandt County Pct. 4 Commissioner Brandon Barton and VZC Judge Andy Reese reminded those in attendance at the Jan. 29 regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court that there will be a VZC Pct. 4 Town Hall Meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 at Edom City Limits.

Three suspects arrested following burglary

Deputies with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Offi ce arrested three suspects in a burglary which occurred overnight Jan. 26 in Van Zandt County.

Canton woman dies in early morning house fire

An early morning house fire west of Canton Jan. 24 resulted in the death of Linda Jones, 74, of Canton, according to Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Kevin Palmer.
A house fire at 27866 State Highway 64 in Canton resulted in a fatality during the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 24. The homeowner, Linda Jones, 74, of Canton, died in the fire. The Canton and South Van Zandt Fire Departments responded to the fire call. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Courtesy photos

Man gets life in prison for motorcycle gang death

After a Smith County jury found a Henderson County man guilty Jan. 17 of a first-degree felony in relation to what the jury believed was giving orders that led to the 2020 shooting death of a motorcyclist near Tyler, the court then followed that conviction Jan. 21 by sentencing him to life in prison.

Retirement ceremony held for VZC Auditor Sandy Hill

Retiring Van Zandt CountyAuditor Sandy Hill was honored by current and former VZC officials as part of a ceremony Jan. 24 during a special called meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court.
An ‘Outstanding Service Award’ was presented to retiring Van Zandt County Auditor Sandy Hill Jan. 24 for her 30 years of service to VZC, including the last seven years as VZC auditor.
