davidb@vanzandtnews.com A young 13-year-old cancer patient from Houston who became nationally known during U.S. President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this year was named as an ‘Honorary Deputy’ in the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department during a special ceremony April 4 in Canton.

davidb@vanzandtnews.com Following the tornado that hit Van Zandt County April 4, Van Zandt County Judge Andy Reese released the following statement to the News. “The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down Friday, April 4, 2025, in Van Zandt County southeast of Grand Saline during the time period of 3:17-3:30pm,” said Reese.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office released the following arrest report from Apr 1, 25 through Apr 8, 25. Jeremy Lane Glasgow, 44, Canton, Interfere w/emergency Req for assistance.

Decoration Day for the Union Chapel Cemetery is set for April 25. The annual business meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Brooklynn Peoples, daughter of Cassie and Josh Peoples, was crowned as the 2025 Miss Van Zandt County March 29 during the 67th Annual VZC Fair and Rodeo at the VZC Fairgrounds in Canton. The Canton Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has announced a Groundbreaking Ceremony for a significant expansion of Industrial Park #1, located at 1171 Industry Drive, Canton. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, April 7.
