This year, 2023, marks the 150th anniversary of the first burial in Union Chapel Cemetery. The anniversary will be celebrated at the cemetery’s annual Decoration Day on April 28, 2023.

The next meeting for Republican Women of Van Zandt is scheduled for Monday, April 10 at the Van Zandt County Library located at 317 First Monday Lane in Canton. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting to being promptly at 6 p.m.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office released the following arrest report from Mar. 28-Apr.

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson reminds all eligible Texas voters to make sure they are registered to vote by Thursday, April 6 to vote in the May 6 local elections across the State of Texas. Not all local governmental entities will be holding elections on May 6, and Texas voters should check with their county elections office for more information on which municipalities, school districts, and other local political subdivisions will be holding elections.

A two-vehicle accident approximately four miles southwest of Quitman resulted in the passing of two individuals March 26, including a 17-year old Alba resident and a 69year old Quitman resident. According to information released by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m.

A packed house was in attendance to hear discussion regarding election equipment options and the continued use of paper ballots during the regular meeting of the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court March 15.

ETHAN ADAMS news@vanzandtnews.com A Van Zandt County woman who previously served in various roles at Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton has been indicted by the VZC grand jury on a second-degree felony charge of theft from a non-profit. Donna Corey Drake was booked into a Van Zandt County Jail March 17 on charges that she stole thousands of dollars from Lakeside Baptist Church over an almost four-year span between 2018 to 2022.

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society hosted quite the spectacle this past weekend, celebrating the 175th birthday of Van Zandt County at the historic Blackwell House Museum, as well as the Van Zandt County Library.
