You have seen it, surely. The tomboy mom who somehow gave birth to a princess daughter who despises the dirty outdoors, but loves makeup, and high fashion. Leaving the mother to wonder if two babies got swapped in the hospital. Confusing stuff sometimes.
Adversity is an unavoidable part of life. Death of a loved one, breakup of a relationship, malicious action by another, job loss, natural disaster, or any other undesirable event are all circumstances people encounter. Events happen that are beyond our control.
Successfully overcoming adversity is essential for a healthy life. Overcoming adversity builds mental strength, character and endurance. You develop in ways that would not otherwise be possible.
Learning to read
Do you remember the books you read in first grade?
I sure do. And I fondly recall spelling tests, recess, flavored milk, and a girl name Lynne. I still drink flavored milk, but my wife tells me a recess with Lynne today is unacceptable.
The best part of school was the “Dick and Jane” stories that taught us to read.
The start of a new football season is now less than a week away for county schools with Canton, Edgewood, Fruitvale, Grand Saline, Van and Wills Point all set to hit the field Aug. 27.
Familiar faces will fill the sidelines with only one school, the Edgewood Bulldogs, undergoing a coaching change.

The Wills Point Lady Tigers have set a lightning fast pace throughout the opening weeks of the 2021 volleyball season, notching wins at an impressive clip as they continue their march towards the start of district play. After suffering a four-set loss during their first match of the year Aug. 10, the Lady Tigers roared back with an impressive run at the Palestine Varsity Tournament Aug. 12-14.
On Aug. 10, Randy Martin and Tristan Rhys, innkeepers and artists, proudly cut the ribbon to officially open Miss Ashley’s Downtown Loft, with help of Edom Area Chamber of Commerce board members Jan Blackmon, Lena Curtis, Kerian Massey and Kathy Holdway. Longtime Vandal supporters, Buddy and Carolyn Tunnell, were honored during the Van ISD School Board meeting with the Forever Vandal Award by the Van ISD Board of Trustees for their dedication, devotion, and love for Van ISD students. “Mr. and Mrs. Tunnell loved children of all ages. They supported our youngest Vandals through their volunteer work each week in Literacy Partners and our older Vandals by showing up to nearly every Vandal sporting event to cheer them on! Mr. and Mrs. Tunnell are moving to be closer to their children and will be sorely missed in our community.
While the outside of Van Zandt Courthouse has received a much needed washing the 294 th District Courtroom has added a couple of needed things to the courtroom as well. VZC District Judge Chris Martin, along with Carl Waddell and Larry Gann of the Van Zandt County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, helped add some decoration to the courtroom, with ‘In God We Trust” and “294 th District Court” now gracing the walls.
