An exciting 2022 football season was scheduled to get even more intense this week with several local teams scheduled to renew their respective rivalries. After years of separation brought about by the UIL’s redistricting decisions, the Edgewood Bulldogs were scheduled to once again lock horns with the Grand Saline Indians.

sports@vanzandtnews.com The annual Rains High School Invitational Cross Country Meet carried with it a distinct Van Zandt County flair with five local school districts, Canton, Edgewood, Martins Mill, Van and Wills Point, all sending individuals or teams to compete.

With his prediction in the ‘tie-breaker’ game, Allan Holloway of Canton is the winner of Football Contest No. 5 in the Holloway, along with Gary Sewell of Wills Point, tied for first place in Football Contest No.

The Van Lady Vandals hit the road to Tyler Sept. 27, taking on a Cumberland Academy squad that has struggled to find consistency throughout the 2022 season. Van would ensure that Cumberland Academy’s woes would continue, cruising to a 25-16, 25-12, 25-16 win.

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Van Lady Vandal Vandals were the standard bearers among Van Zandt County volleyball programs in 2021, reaching the Regional Semifinals before bowing out to Celina. While the playoffs are still looming over the horizon, Van has looked sharp as ever since district play began, moving to 3-0 overall last week with convincing wins over both Athens and longtime rival Mabank.

In December of 1972, the Edgewood School Board voted to rename the football stadium after a person long affiliated with Edgewood Schools, Mr. I.T.
