The 1964 B-District Champion Canton High School Eagle varsity football team, which not only went undefeated during the scheduled season, but also was not scored on, will be having their 60th team reunion Friday, Sept. 13.
The 2024-25 school year for sports gets underway Monday, Aug. 5 as varsity football and volleyball teams throughout Van Zandt County will be starting their pre-season workouts.
A number of Grand Saline High School Bass Association (GSHSBA) teams competed May 18, 19 at the Texas High School Bass Association (THSBA) State Championship Tournament at Lake Palestine. The GSHSBA had seven teams that qualified for the THSBA State Championship Tournament.
Joseph Rolland of Wills Point High School captured first place in the Triple Jump at the Class 4A Regional Track Meet recently to earn a trip to next month’s Class 4A State Track Meet. His winning mark at the regional meet held at the University of North Texas in Denton was 47-4.
This past week at Van Zandt Country Club, the Canton Eaglettes golf team finished second at the Region II-4A tournament. The Eaglettes will qualify for the Class 4A State Golf Tournament May 6-7 at the Legends Course in Kingsland.
Seven teams will be advancing to the state fishing tournament with the Grand Saline High School Bass Association (GSHSBA) next month. “Lake Tawakoni wasn’t sharing its treasures with this tournament easily,” said a GSHSBA spokesperson.
Van senior Landry Jones was recently named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s All-State Girls Basketball Team for Class 4A. Jones was also named to the Class 1A-4A Legacy All-Star Team.
Van finished second in the boys’ division and placed fourth in the girls’ division March 21 at the Avon Rice Relays at Rains High School in Emory. The Vandal boys’ track team finished second out of 12 teams with 62 points.
