Wills Point High School senior Cooper O’Neal was selected and played in the Native American All-Star Football Game that was held Jan. 7 at The Star in Frisco.

White-tail deer season wraps up this weekend (Jan 19) for North Texas hunters. Thanks to the muzzleloader and special youth season, hunting continues throughout the weekend of Jan 18-19 and then deer hunters have to wait until next fall to again take to the whitetail woods, but did you know that on many Texas ranches that are permitted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), deer can be harvested through February by special permit?

The Canton Eagles varsity boys’ basketball team split two district matches as they defeated Kemp on the road Jan. 7 before falling at home to Athens Jan.

The Canton Eaglettes extended their home win streak with a 52-28 victory over the Brownsboro Bearettes Jan. 14 marking their fourth consecutive win against Brownsboro.

Three members of the Van Vandal varsity football team received ‘Superlative’ honors as the District 7-4A, Division 2, All-District Football Team was recently announced. Coach Jared Moffatt’s Vandals finished 10-4 overall as they advanced to the state quarterfinal round of the Class 4A, Division 2, state playoffs.

The Grand Saline Indians were well represented on the District 9-3A, Division 2, All-District Football Team announced recently. Coach Joe Drennon’s Grand Saline Indians finished 2024 with an overall record of 11-1 after capturing the District 9-3A, Division 2, championship as well as the Class 3A, Division 2, bi-district title.

Three members of the Edgewood Bulldog varsity football team earned ‘Superlative’ awards as the District 9-3A, Division 2, All-District Team was recently announced. Coach Alex Guerra’s Bulldogs finished 8-4 overall after finishing in second place in the district race and winning the Class 3A, Division 2, bi-district championship.

davidb@vanzandtnews.com One of the most impressive post-season runs in the history of the school came to a disappointing conclusion for the Van Vandals Dec. 6 as they were eliminated in the Regional Final/State Quarterfinal round of the Class 4A, Division 2, state football playoffs by the Carthage Bulldogs, 53-14, at Longview Pine Tree’s Pirate Stadium.
