Lady Dogs open up district title defense

Eagles cap off undefeated week with 1st place finish

The Canton Eagles continued their early season run of dominance this past week, completing an unscathed slate with wins over Caddo Mills, Nevada Community, Tenaha, Henderson, North McKinney, and Kilgore to capture the Great East Texas Shootout Championship.

Lady Vandals rout Cumberland Academy

The Van Lady Vandals got their first taste of District 16-4A play this week, kicking off their most important stretch of the 2022-’23 season with a game against Cumberland Academy. Van would deliver a dominant performance in the contest, getting all the offense they would need in the opening quarter on their way to a 66-10 rout of the Knights.

Roberts named First Team All-District

The Wills Point Tiger football program endured plenty of challenges during the 2022 season, battling through a glut of injuries and an in-season coaching change on their way to a 1-9 mark overall. coaches came away impressed with the strides the Tigers had made over previous seasons, recognizing multiple players as First Team All-District, Second Team All-District or Honorable Mention All-District performers.

Lady Vandals strike gold in Wills Point

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Van Lady Vandals made the familiar trek to Wills Point last week, competing against teams from across the area at the annual State Farm Invitational Basketball Tournament Dec. 1-3. Van would make it look easy at the event, winning each of their four games by at least 14 points each on their way to a first place finish. Van began play with just one game Dec. 1, easily dismissing the Mineola Yellowjackets 50-36. Marisa Richardson led the way for Van in the win with 22 points while Landry Jones added 13, Cassidy Stewart five and Jordan Ryan and Ella Barrett four totaling 18 points, seven steals and three assists. Other players hitting the stat sheet included Landry Jones and Jordan Ryan with 11 each and Cassidy Stewart and Ella Barrett with seven each.

Eaglettes finish second in Winnsboro Hoopfest

The Canton Eaglettes capped off another winning week with a second-place finish in the 18th annual Winnsboro Hoopfest Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3. Overall, the Eaglettes went 5-1 on the week, with wins over Saltillo, Whitehouse, Malakoff, Mount Pleasant (Chapel Hill), and Edgewood, and their only loss coming in the championship game to the hosting Winnsboro Lady Raiders.

Tigers to host annual tournament
