Shelton pleads guilty, faces prison sentence

Steven “Craig” Shelton, 61, pleaded guilty July 6 in federal court in the Eastern District of Texas to violating an arrestee’s civil rights by using excessive force against him. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston for the Eastern District of Texas, and Special Agent in Charge Matthew DeSarno of the FBI Dallas Field Division made the announcement.

Traffic along County Road 243 near County Road 2512 was closed for close to three hours July 5 after a two-vehicle accident at approximately 2:30 p.m. According to reports, a truck pulling a flatbed trailer was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler while attempting to turn. City of Van enacts Stage 3 Drought Contingency Plan

Due to the loss of a major water well source, the City of Van announced July 5 that Stage Three of the city’s Drought Contingency Plan is being implemented, effective immediately. “Stage Three of the Drought Contingency Plan is being implemented due to the unexpected loss of a water well source along with summer drought conditions within its service area,” said City of Van Public Works Director Kevin Johnson.

Four convicted in 2006 slayings

Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley and the Terrell Police Department announced the convictions of Bianca Newman, Justin Prox, Darrius Hubbard, and Anthony Holliman in the Pizza Hut murders July 6.

Criminal history clause in VZC Game Room Ordinance changed

A change in the criminal history clause of the Van Zandt County Game Room Ordinance received unanimous approval from the VZC Commissioners Court during its regular session July 6. The action by the commissioners’ court was taken following a presentation by VZC Criminal District Attorney Tonda Curry.

Van to host state tournament in July

The City of Van will be hosting the Age 10 and Under Boys State Baseball Tournament beginning Monday, July 11 and continuing through Friday, July 15, according to City of Van Parks Director Matt Malone. An ‘if necessary’ game has been added for Saturday, July 16.

Canton Senior Citizens Center will host this community event on 7/8/2022. The site is located at 200 Groves St in Canton.

New disc golf course opens at TVCC

A new nine-hole disc golf course has made its way to the Trinity Valley Community College campus for students and the community to enjoy. On Saturday, June 25, a new aspect of RecSports came when TVCC Recruiter Colby Calhoun, assisted by the Lunar Disc Golf Club, installed a nine-hole disc golf course on the south side of campus stretching from the park to the Fine Arts Building.
