First Baptist Church of Canton, located at 303 South Athens Street, will be hosting an Open House and Dedication Service for the Grand Opening of their new Student Center facility Wednesday, April 30.

The 74th Annual National Day of Prayer program is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, in the Van Zandt County District Courtroom located on the third floor of the VZC Courthouse. The program, which is held each year on the first Thursday in May, will run from 12:15-12:45 p.m.

April 24, 1942- April 17, 2025 James McArthur Tyson was born April 24, 1942, in Louisiana. He moved to Texas in 1962 where he met his wife, Betty.

Nelda Jean McCauley, 87, of Canton passed away peacefully in Arlington on April 18, 2025. She was born on October 5, 1937, in Canton to Homer Dewitt Wages Sr. and Della Mae Crabtree Wages. She was the youngest girl of 11 children.

Molly Garrett, 50, and her husband, Jeffrey, have one child, Landon. She earned an Associate of Arts degree in history from Tyler Junior College, and a Bachelor of Science degree in communication as well as a Master of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on communication from UT-Tyler.

Samantha Smith is currently serving on the Van City Council having been appointed in July 2024 to fill the unexpired term of former councilman Linzy Neal. Before serving on the council, Smith served on the City of Van’s Planning and Zoning Board.
