STAFF REPORTS Local law enforcement officials found themselves in a dangerous situation last week, engaging in a high-speed chase to detain a suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a woman in Edgewood that also involved the kidnapping of a small child. According to reports of the incident, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Downs Street in Edgewood after receiving reports of shots being fired.

The first day of the 2022-’23 school year for Canton, Edgewood and Martins Mill brought with it the usual smiles, nerves and occasional tears for students and parents alike Aug. 15. Two other county districts, Grand Saline and Van, will start their respective school years during the upcoming week.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released 2022 A-F accountability ratings for districts and campuses, the first to be issued since 2019 due to two years of COVID-related pauses. The TEA noted that 1,195 districts and 8,451 campuses were rated this year, with returns showing promising signs of progress in Texas’s efforts to catch students up academically.

The Wills Point Tigers tennis program picked up a double dose of good news last week, powering their way past rival Van Aug. 23 before receiving word that they are currently 5th overall in the state in the most recent Class 4A State Rankings. The Tiger varsity will look to maintain its perfect record with a home match against Bullard Aug. 25 and a trip to Spring Hill Sept. 3.

The 2022 high school football season in Van Zandt County means the return of ‘The Huddle Show’ on Canton radio station KWJB (95.1 FM, ‘The Bee’) beginning Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Mineola radio station KMOO (99.9 FM) has announced that the 2022 football season premiere of ‘The Locker Room Show’ will be Monday, Aug. 22, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The start of the 2022 high school football season Friday, Aug. 26, in Van Zandt County means the return of the Van Zandt News Football Contest, now in its 41st season.

After a two-year hiatus Colfax Homecoming is back on the calendar. The beloved tradition of the Colfax community will resume Aug.

The Van FFA chapter has been recognized in the 2022 National Chapter Award Program from the National FFA Organization. The program recognizes outstanding FFA chapters from throughout the country that actively implement the mission and strategies of the organization.
