Joseph Byrum, UT-Tyler Program Manager: Inspired by his motherin- law’s recent battle with breast cancer, Joseph Byrum felt compelled to join the D.E.F.E.A.T Breast Cancer team to make a positive impact in his community. With a background in public health and program management, Joseph has seen the life-saving impact of early detection and knowledge.

UT-Health Program Manager Breast cancer is a critical public health issue affecting thousands of women each year in Texas, including those in EastTexas. Early detection through regular mammogram screenings is one of the most effective ways to reduce mortality rates, as it allows for the identification and treatment of cancer at earlier, more treatable stages.

In East Texas, there is a multitude of barriers that prevent people from accessing resources regarding their health. specifically, women are not receiving their mammograms.
