Tax rate approved by Van Council

Body Van City Council members took action on a number of items including the adoption of the tax rate for 2021 and fiscal year 2022 duringits regular monthly meeting Sept. 9 at the new Van City Hall location inside the Van Community Center building.

First Baptist Canton celebrates 150 years

Body The very first service at FBC Canton was held in a rented school building, located on the present site of the First Baptist Church of Canton at 303 Athens St. The Rev. J. B. Daniel was serving as the first pastor, with about 12 charter families in attendance.

Body On Tuesday, Aug. 31, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Van Zandt County dispatch was notified of a black SUV traveling on westbound Interstate 20 with reports that a man inside the vehicle was displaying a semi-automatic handgun to another commuter traveling down Interstate 20.

Body On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the State of Texas rolled out new state laws impacting the right to carry a handgun without training or permits, along with laws on alcohol sales, medical marijuana, vaccine passports, critical race theory and the Heartbeat Bill.
