Lookabaugh, Nixon lead Martins Mill graduation

Body Martins Mill ISD held commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 27 in the high school gymnasium. The ceremony was led by Valedictorian Kylee Lookabaugh and Salutatorian Mia Nixon.
Around the county, school districts gathered families, friends, and district staff to hold commencement exercises for the Class of 2022. Van ISD, Martins Mill ISD, Grand Saline ISD and Edgewood ISD each held ceremonies to honor their respective graduating classes.

Body Under near perfect weather conditions May 27 at Van’s Memorial Stadium, the 177 graduates of the Class of 2022 at Van High School received their diplomas. Van School Board Secretary Shannon Johnson welcomed those in attendance and led in the opening prayer.

Accomplishments recognized during Van trustee meeting

Body Team and individual achievements received recognition May 16 during the regular monthly meeting of the Van School Board. Van High School Principal Jeff Hutchins introduced the UIL (University Interscholastic League) State Bronze Medalist VHS Social Studies team.

Brown-Smith earns top Girl Scout honor

Body Emma Lou Brown-Smith, Van High School graduate of 2021, was recognized as a recipient of the highest Girl Scout award, the Gold Award, on May 14, 2022, by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas.

Flag Day, Flag Week proclamation approved by court

Body A proclamation calling for Flag Day and Flag Week to be celebrated in Van Zandt County in June was approved unanimously May 25 by the VZC Commissioners Court during its regular meeting.

Charges dismissed against Sheriff Hendrix

Body On Friday, May 20, charges against former Van Zandt County Sheriff Steve Hendrix and two of his deputies for giving a false statement to a peace officer were dismissed.

Vets Memorial to hold program May 30

Body Memorial Day will again take on a special meaning in Van Zandt County as the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial Board has announced that they will be hosting their annual program beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at the VZC Veterans Memorial in Canton.

‘Open Mic Night’ scheduled in Van

Body The City of Van and the Van EDC (Economic Development Corporation) are sponsoring ‘3rd Thursdays with Erin York’ featuring an ‘Open Mic Night’ at The Movie House in downtown Van. The first ‘Open Mic Night’ was held May 19.
