Lady Mustangs continue chase for seventh title

The Martins Mill Lady Mustangs booked a return trip to what has become their home away from home last week, knocking off Tenaha and LaPoynor in the Regional Tournament on their way to another appearance at the State Tournament in San Antonio.

Vandals compete at Grand Saline Tournament

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Van Vandal baseball program saw their season hit overdrive last week, taking to the field six times over a three-day span as they competed at the Grand Saline Tournament before hosting White Oak for a non-district matchup. Van would go 4-2 during the busy slate, including a 4-1 mark during the tournament.

District 16-4A Superlatives announced by coaches

With the 2022-’23 season now in the rearview for District 16-4A teams, coaches released their list of Superlative and All-District honorees. Van, which would win this year’s district title by outlasting a slate that included defending Class 4A State Champions Brownsboro and perennial playoff contenders Canton, would earn two Superlative recognitions while Brownsboro earned three and Canton one.

Greenville gets better of Bulldogs, 7-2

The Edgewood Bulldogs officially kicked off their 2023 season on Monday night, playing host to Greenville in matchup, taking advantage of a five-run third inning to score a 7-2 win. Seven different pitchers took turns on the mound for Edgewood in the contest including Lukas Grace, Graham Fabbri, Levi McKnight, Jaxon McConnell, Lucas Lasater, Alex Martinez and Brady Bannister.

Baseball program jumpstarts season at Forney

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Wills Point Tiger baseball program began shaking off the rust from a long offseason last week, traveling west to compete at the annual Forney Tournament Feb. 23-25. The Tigers would struggle to find their way over the course of the three-day event, dropping all four games as they continue to work in multisport athletes that just wrapped up their basketball schedule.

Familiar faces greet Mustangs at Regional Tourney

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Martins Mill Mustangs cleared two more hurdles on their way to a possible Class 2A State Tournament trip last week, dispatching both District 18-2A champions Marlin in Area round action and longtime foe and district rival Frankston in the Regional Quarterfinals to advance to the Regional Basketball Tournament in Athens March 3-4.

The Wills Point Lady Tigers competed in their second tournament in as many weeks Feb. 23-25, making their way east to compete against some of the top programs in the area at the Tyler Umpire Tournament.

The Edgewood Lady Dogs made it look easy this week, scoring at least three runs in three separate innings on their way to a 12-1 rout of overmatched Eustace Feb. 28.

Bobcats, Lady Cats earn All-District nods

With every District 15-2A team officially eliminated from playoff contention, coaches released their list of Superlative and All-District honors for the 2022-’23 basketball season. Ronnie Foster would earn a spot on the All-District First Team in a vote of competing coaches, while CJ Russell was named All-District Second Team and Will Hunt, Jason Servin and Bryce Mobley all earning Honorable Mention All-District nods.
