Funeral services for Dorthy Lee Thornton, 91, of Edgewood, were scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, at Cheatham Memorial Methodist Church. Visitation was held Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral home, Edgewood. The family received friends on Dec. 15, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial was held at Haven of Memories in Canton. Services were under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home.

Dorthy passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022. She was born Dorthy Lee Tinkle on Feb. 8, 1931, in Houston, to parents Robert Lee Tinkle and Susan Cornelia Jackson Tinkle. She was raised in Houston and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School. Dorthy later attended business school in the area. She met Harvey Bayne “Skeet” Thornton in Houston, and they married on Oct. 15, 1949, at the Garden Villas Methodist Church. Dorthy worked for the Houston Livestock show over the commercial exhibits and met many stars like Conway Twitty, Englebert Humperdink, Mac Jones and Charlie Pride. She and Skeet moved to Pearland in 1957, where he farmed and raised cattle. Dorthy was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed staying home with her children while her husband was on the farm. She and Skeet again moved, this time to the Edgewood community in 1974, where they were members of the Cheatham Memorial Methodist Church. In 1977, Dorthy was employed by Edgewood ISD for six years, and also spent 19 years as a ranch office manager for Frank L. Branson. Living in Edgewood, she and Skeet made many great friends. In 1990, Skeet and Dorthy established a bed and breakfast, Crooked Creek Farms. Dorthy still operated Crooked Creek Farms until a few years ago. Dorthy was a volunteer for the 4-H club and received the Distinguished Volunteer Adult Leader of Texas and volunteered for the 4-H club youth Development Foundation at Texas A&M.

Dorthy is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Susan Tinkle; husband, Harvey Bayne “Skeet” Thornton; daughter, Susan Kathleen “Kathy” Christian, and stepdaughter, Kathryn Dewitt.

Dorthy is survived by her sons, Harvey Loyd Thornton and wife, Cristy, of Kemah; Marshall Lee Thornton and wife, Mauna, of Edgewood; John Larry Thornton and wife, Terri, of Huntsville, and Thomas Lynn Thornton and Charlene of George West; 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
