Traffic along FM 859 near the Edgewood city limits was brought to a standstill for hours Oct. 11 after an 18-wheeler hauling asphalt rolled over. Crews from various county agencies, including the Edgewood Police Department, Edgewood Fire Department, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Transportation, all responded to the scene and helped to manage traffic while the 18-wheeler was put back on its wheels and the asphalt could be cleared. No major injuries were reported as a result of the accident.

East Texas Crisis Center to hold domestic violence vigil

For more than four decades, the East Texas Crisis Center has established itself as a safe haven for those impacted by family violence, dating violence, sexual assault and violent crime. In Van Zandt County those efforts date back to 1991 and include a wide range of services including crisis intervention, safety planning, support groups, peer counseling, shelter, economic education classes, community resources and information, legal advocacy, limited financial assistance, transportation to emergency shelter and medical accompaniment.

The Republican Women of Van Zandt County hosted an appreciation reception for elected officials leaving office at the end of the year Oct. 7 at the Blackwell House in Canton. Honored and presented with a certificate of appreciation were Don Kirkpatrick, County Judge; Tim West, County Commissioner Precinct 4; and Sandra Plaster, JP Precinct 2. Approximatley 75 people attended the come and go reception.
