Accident leads to fatality
Two WPHS students injured
Two Wills Point High School students were transported to the hospital in critical condition and a good Samaritan was killed after a series of accidents along Interstate 20 in Kaufman County just before midnight Aug. 20.
According to DPS Sergeant Kyle Bradford, highway patrol troopers were dispatched to Interstate 20 near mile marker 511 at approximately 11:59 p.m. Aug. 20 in response to a major traffic accident.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that a previous crash involving a Dodge Journey and a Toyota Sienna resulted with the Dodge Journey remaining disabled in the eastbound lane of traffic. An 18-wheeler noticed the crash and stopped in the lane of travel to assist. Two of the three occupants in the Dodge Journey left their vehicle to speak with the driver of the 18-wheeler, who had also exited his vehicle,” said Bradford.
“The occupants were discussing the crash when a pickup truck attempted to swerve around the 18-wheeler, failing to see the disabled vehicle or the individuals standing in the roadway. The driver of the pick-up truck struck all three occupants. The driver and passenger of the Dodge Journey were transported to Baylor Medical Center in critical condition, the driver of the 18-wheeler was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the pick-up truck was not injured. The driver of the Toyota Sienna was not injured.
“The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.”
The identity of the driver of the 18-wheeler that stopped to render aid was not immediately available as of press time.
The Wills Point ISD Police Department broke news of the accident to the community posting on its own Facebook page the following morning stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we inform our student body, staff and community that we had two of our precious high school students involved in a motor vehicle accident last night in Kaufman County. We are extremely thankful both students are alive, but both sustained severe injuries. This is all the information we have at this time.
“We ask that everyone please be respectful of both students’ families and give them the grace and privacy they need, especially in the coming days. We would also ask that everyone in our community please pause for just a few seconds each day over the next few days to say a prayer of protection and healing to cover our kids.”
According to the most recent update available, both of the young women involved in the accident have shown signs of improvement.
