New scam hits county residents

DAVID KAPITAN sports@vanzandtnews.com The Van Zandt County Appraisal District took to social media this week, advising county residents of an ongoing scam involving letters sent advising of property owners having warranted liens. The letter, which features letterhead from “Tax Lien Unit 2 – Tax Processing Unit”, warns property owners of outstanding debts related to unpaid property taxes.

Canton child killed in two-vehicle accident

An 8-year-old Canton native was killed and his mother injured following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of FM 90 and FM 47 just after 1 p.m. May 19.

Dutton announces candidacy for Texas House District 2

Today, conservative businesswoman Jill Ashmore Dutton announces her candidacy for Texas House District 2 in the Special Election to be held later this year. Texas House District 2 serves Hopkins, Hunt, and Van Zandt Counties.

Van council looking to fill vacancy following Rust’s resignation

DAVID BARBER davidb@vanzandtnews.com For the second year in a row, the Van City Council is looking to fill a council seat as options were discussed on how to proceed with that decision during the regular monthly meeting of the council May 11. Melissa Rust, serving her first term as a Van City Council member, resigned following the April 13 regular monthly meeting.

Several athletes recognized during annual Van Sports Banquet

A standing room only crowd of around 500 were in attendance May 1 to witness a number of athletes receive recognition during the annual Van All-Sports Banquet at the Van High School Cafetorium. VHS Athletic Director Jared Moffatt welcomed those in attendance as he presented the opening remarks following the dinner.
