Dutton sends letter to chairman following public meeting

DAVID BARBER davidb@vanzandtnews.com Following a public meeting held by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) in Canton July 25, Texas District 2 State Representative Jill Dutton released a letter she sent to TCEQ Chairman Jon Niermann of Austin July 30 regarding the permit application for Class B Biosolids and Residuals by Denali Water Solutions LLC of Russellville, Arkansas. The permit, if approved by the TCEQ, would authorize the land application of Class B wastewater treatment plant biosolids and water treatment plant residuals for beneficial use on 57 acres in Van Zandt County.

Football, volleyball practices begin Monday

The 2024-25 school year for sports gets underway Monday, Aug. 5 as varsity football and volleyball teams throughout Van Zandt County will be starting their pre-season workouts.

CHS 1964 football team planning 60th reunion

The 1964 B-District Champion Canton High School Eagle varsity football team, which not only went undefeated during the scheduled season, but also was not scored on, will be having their 60th team reunion Friday, Sept. 13.
Team members of the 1964 Canton Eagle football team will be recognized during halftime ceremonies of the Eagle/Paris North Lamar game Sept. 13 at Norris Birdwell Stadium. The team will meet for a pre-game meal at Easley’s Restaurant prior to kickoff that night. State approves courthouse restoration grant for VZC

Van Zandt County Judge Andy Reese opened the regular meeting of the VZC Commissioners Court July 31 with some positive news from the state regarding VZC’s grant application for courthouse restoration. “On April 25, the commissioners’ court approved us to apply for a courthouse restoration grant from the Texas Historical Commission,” recalled Reese to those in attendance. “We submitted our grant application on May 10. In 2018, we applied for a grant from the Texas Historical Commission to put together construction documents to renovate and restore our courthouse. We applied in 2020 for a restoration grant. At that time, “There were ‘full restoration’ grants, ‘planning grants’ like we received in 2018, ‘emergency’ grants, and ‘previously restored’ grants.
