Special Session coming to an end

The end of the First Called Special Session of 2025 is in sight, but the Texas Senate did its job by passing all 16 items on the Governor’s list. Unfortunately, House Democrats fled the state, leaving their duties, families, and constituents in the lurch.

Hall’s office filed proposed state legislative bills

The office of Texas District 2 State Senator Bob Hall recently filed four proposed bills during the current Special Session of the Texas Legislature. The topics of the bills dealt with the subjects of District Notification, Five Percent Threshold, Landowner Liability, and Eminent Domain and are described by Hall’s office as follows: Senate Bill 57: District Notification The Problem: Recently, corporate entities attempted to exploit the natural resources of the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.

Fire prevention conference set for Aug. 22

The Texas Farm Bureau and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension offices in Canton will be hosting a Farm/Ranch Fire Prevention Conference Friday, Aug. 22 at the Van Zandt County Farm Bureau Event Center located at 220 Burnett Trail in Canton.

VZC/Sarah Norman Library hosts Aviation Allies exhibit

‘Aviation Allies: The Royal Air Force in Terrell’ is the title of a traveling exhibit now on view at the Van Zandt County/Sarah Norman Library in Canton through the month of August. The exhibit tells the story of the partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States to train hundreds of British pilots in North Texas before and during World War II.

TFFC temporarily closed for public visitation

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens has temporarily closed to visitors while Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) completes emergency repairs to a steel column that structurally supports the main visitor center building.

Back-To-School Prayer Rally

Rev. Kelly Krone of the First United Methodist Church of Grand Saline led in prayer Aug. 7 during the third annual Back-To-School Prayer Rally for students, staff, and schools in Grand Saline ISD. The rally was held at each GSISD campus and was attended by over 100 citizens. GSISD opened the 2025-26 school year Aug. 13. Additional photos on 9A.

‘Classics for the Classics’ set for Aug. 21 in Canton

In celebration of National Senior Citizens Day, Country Place Senior Living, located at 1835 South Trade Days Blvd. in Canton, will host ‘Classics for the Classics’ from 9-11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 in the Mulberry building.
