Search continues for new VZC auditor after removal of Gazda

According to press releases on the Van Zandt County website, Van Zandt County is again searching for a new auditor after the removal of Catherine Gazda on May 22. “In late 2024, VZC Auditor Sandy Hill announced that she would be retiring from her job in January 2025,” said VZC Judge Andy Reese in a June 2 press release.

Mayor, three council members sworn into office

davidb@vanzandtnews.com Three city council members and the mayor were sworn into office June 12 during the regular monthly meeting of the Van City Council. After serving as Acting Mayor since July 2024, Ernie Burns was sworn in for a full two-year term as Van Mayor.

SPCA granted custody of animals removed from property

According to the SPCA of Texas, following an incomplete request for appeal at a civil custody hearing Wednesday, June 11, in the Van Zandt County Courthouse, VZC Court at Law Judge Joshua Wintters defaulted to the previous judgement, awarding custody of 66 allegedly cruelly treated animals removed from a metal building owned by Hayley Hull in Van Zandt County. The SPCA of Texas also was awarded $22,090.75 in restitution.

Homeschool participation in UIL events ending in Van

In a 5-2 vote during their regular monthly meeting June 16, the Van School Board decided to discontinue homeschool participation in University Interscholastic League (UIL) events for the 2025-26 school year.

Army’s 250th anniversary celebrated at Veterans Memorial

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 12219 Sgt.-at-Arms Jeff Long of Wills Point chimed the bell in remembrance of 10 generations of soldiers that gave their last full measure of life in battle during the U.S. Army’s 250th Anniversary celebration ceremony June 14 at the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial in Canton. Over 120 Army and Army Air Corps names of ‘Killed in Action’ from VZC were read in reverence. by Faith Caughron
