1946 – 2024 Joy Jeannene Masterson Barnhart passed away February 24, 2024, in Grand Saline. She was born July 2, 1946, in Dallas, to Donald Joy “Indian” & Florence Evelyn Riley Masterson.
The road to the state tournament in San Antonio next month got off to an impressive start for the Martins Mill Mustangs boys’ varsity basketball team Feb. 19 as they blew past Groveton, 9144, in the bi-district round of the Class 2A boys’ state basketball playoffs.
The Martins Mill Lady Mustangs continued their impressive post-season play Feb. 19 as they dominated Lovelady, 56-31, in the Class 2A Regional Quarterfinals at Slocum High School.
It was a tough night overall for the Van Lady Vandals as they saw their varsity basketball season come to a close Feb. 16 at the hands of Sunnyvale, 58-36.
After winning fourth place in their district with two hard-earned victories last week, the Van Vandals continued their winning ways as they opened post-season play with an impressive 49-38 victory over Sulphur Springs in the bi-district round of the Class 4A boys’ basketball playoffs Feb. 20 in Royse City. Trailing 11-10 after the first quarter of play, the Vandals outscored Sulphur Springs, 13-4, in the second quarter to take a 23-15 lead at halftime and 38-29 at the end of the third quarter. The Vandals were scheduled to meet Dallas Pinkston in the Area round of the state playoffs Feb. 23 at North Forney High School.
The Grand Saline Friends of the Library is beginning its annual membership drive with letters going out to those who have joined in the past. The membership drive is the Friends’ main fundraising event each year.
The Texas Area Basketball Association of Basketball Offi cials (TABO) recently named 13 boys and girls varsity basketball players as area recipients of scholarship awards. Among those area athletes named as scholarship award winners were Payton Bray of Canton, Shelby Burns of Van, Kate Lindsey of Martins Mill, and Blair McPherson of Edgewood.
