1936-2023 Michael Arthur Newby, 86, of Canton, passed away on April 21, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born May 8, 1936, in Graham, to Gilbert Arthur and Zuma Beatrice Irene Veal Newby.

The Van Lady Vandals staked their claim as the top program in District 16-4A last week, upending the Athens Lady Hornets 5-0 behind a stellar pitching performance from freshman Jailey Potter and timely hitting offensively. Potter would keep Athens hitters at bay throughout the night, allowing just three hits while striking out six in a complete game win.

The Van Vandals crossed paths with a familiar foe this week, making the short drive to Brownsboro to take on the Bears in a District 16-4A tilt April 18. Two bad innings would prove to be the difference in the contest as Brownsboro powered its way to a 10-1 win over the Vandals.
