While the District 8-4A, Division 2, District Champion and Class 4A, Division, 2, State Champion Carthage Bulldogs dominated the ‘Superlative’ awards, the Van Vandals and the Canton Eagles were well represented on the District 8-4A, Division 2, All-District Football Team released earlier this month.

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Wills Point Tigers hit the court just once over the past week, maintaining their perfect record in district play with a 64-48 rout of the Nevada Community Braves Jan. 3.

District play returned for both the Canton Eagles and Eaglettes this past week, as both teams handily defeated an unfamiliar foe, Cumberland Academy, in home matchups on Friday, Jan. 6.

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Wills Point Lady Tigers have been a team on a mission since the start of district play, rebounding from a slow start to the season to power their way into playoff contention. That trend continued last week as Wills Point easily turned back the Nevada Community Lady Braves Jan. 3 to score a 47-33 win.

A pair of familiar foes squared off on the hardwood in Grand Saline this week as the Indian and Lady Indian basketball programs played host to chief rival Edgewood in District 12-3A action Jan. 10.

Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.83/g Jan. 9, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 14.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 3.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 2.1 cents in the last week and stands at $4.64 per gallon.

The Texas Association of School Boards is joining school districts across the state to show appreciation for locally elected board members as part of School Board Recognition Month, which is celebrated each year in January.

It’s January and 2023 is here!! It’s time to start thinking about all things new and a spirit of renewal. The library ladies are looking forward to the new year. The North & East Texas Press Association, in conjunction with the Texas Press Association, will once again award two $1,500 scholarships to eligible candidates at its April 27-29, 2023 convention held in Nacogdoches. Over the years, NETPA has helped college-bound journalism students with tuition and books through this scholarship program which is funded by private donations and through the annual auction held at the convention.
