davidb@vanzandtnews.com Tommy Forgue was approved as the new Van Zandt County Veterans Service Officer May 21 by the VZC Commissioners Court during its regular meeting. Forgue, who will be succeeding Harry Fontenot on June 1, was introduced to the commissioners’ court and those in attendance by VZC Pct.

Despite rainy and windy conditions, the annual Memorial Day program May 26 went on as scheduled underneath the pavilion at the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial in Canton. Members of Scout Troop 378 presented the Colors to open the program followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Canton High School student Harper Ellis.

The Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against the developers of a lithium battery storage facility being built south of Canton has been extended through Wednesday, June 4. Van Zandt County Criminal District Attorney Tonda Curry updated the VZC Commissioners Court during its regular meeting May 21.

Hope Center in Canton will be hosting a community- wide Touch-A-Truck event from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, June 7 at the First Baptist Church of Canton parking lots.

A total of 25 seniors received their diplomas May 23 during the 2025 Fruitvale High School Graduation in the FHS Gymnasium. Following the procession, ‘Pomp and Circumstance,’ and the National Anthem, Fruitvale ISD Superintendent Rebecca Bain welcomed those in attendance.

January 26, 1943 – May 19, 2025 Jerry W. Whitton, born in the Whitton community on January 26, 1943, left this earth on May 19, 2025, from his home where he was cared for.

August 17, 1940 – May 23, 2025 Services for Peggy Weddle Stacy, 84, of Aransas Pass, Texas, were held Friday, May 30, 2025, at First Baptist Church, Fruitvale, with Bro. Gary Vaughn officiating, under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home, Grand Saline.

davidb@vanzandtnews.com A large number of supporters and well-wishers were in the stands May 23 for the Van High School Class of 2025 Graduation Ceremony at Van’s Memorial Stadium. Following the graduating class entrance into the stadium to the processional ‘Pomp and Circumstance,’ Van School Board Secretary Shannon Johnson welcomed those in attendance and led in the invocation.

A good turnout was on hand May 23 for the Grand Saline High School Class of 2025 Graduation Ceremony at Indian Memorial Stadium. GSHS Class of 2025 Graduate Carson Brown welcomed those in attendance.
