Patty Cakes Child Care, located at 508 Tennessee Street in Wills Point, has announced that they are once again hosting their annual Kans for Kaci Food Drive. A release announcing the event noted, “Kaci has been part of the Patty Cakes family since she was six weeks old, and will remain in our hearts and memories forever.

Since 2009, more than 26.5 million children who have received an Operation Christmas Child Shoebox gift have participated in The Greatest Journey—a 12 lesson discipleship program. Children learn from trained, local volunteers what it means to follow Jesus and share their faith with friends and family.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9, a grandmother, daughter and grandchild pulled into the Van Zandt County Animal Care Center on Highway 80 just outside of Wills Point. The daughter had brought two puppies to be checked on for medical issues. The grandmother and daughter waited in the car when smoke started appearing from under the engine hood. A fire soon broke out starting to engulf the vehicle. Jonathan Suder, who noticed the flames from his office window, immediately ran outside and pulled the small child out of the car seat and was able to get the grandmother out of the vehicle before it became fully involved. The heat was so intense that it did shatter some of the business windows but fortunately the business did not sustain any major damage. Following a 3-2 vote during their regular meeting Nov. 10, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court approved a new redistricting plan for the four commissioner court precincts.

“Always remember our veterans,” was the theme during the Van Zandt County Veterans Day Program held Nov. 11 at the VZC Veterans Memorial.

American Legion Post 156 Officer Dan Curtis (USAR, retired), along with other veterans, lent a helping hand to a Van Zandt County veteran throughout the week. Curtis, who is an officer with Post 156 in Emory, as well as an officer in the VFW of Seven Points and a board member of the VZC Veterans Memorial, said he sees a need for VZC to have a VFW Post.

The Martins Mill ISD Robotics team is headed to state competition. The team was named the UIL BEST Game Champion, UIL BEST Award Champion and earned first place in the engineering notebook category during competition. Congratulations to the team from Martins Mill ISD. Courtesy photo
