July 4th celebration activities set in VZC

Duncan appointed to Van Council

DAVID BARBER davidb@vanzandtnews.com Following a closed executive session at the conclusion of their regular monthly meeting June 8, the Van City Council announced the appointment of a new council member. Van resident Laura Duncan, who is employed with Texas Bank & Trust in Lindale, was named to replace former council member Melissa Rust in Place #4.
The oath of office was administered to incumbent Van City Council members Mark Heatwole (far left), Linzy Neal, and Charles Ryan during the regular monthly council meeting June 8. Ryan participated in the swearing-in ceremony through ZOOM. Administering the oath of office was City of Van Secretary Sereca Huggins. Van High School journalism students visit New York City

A group of Van High School journalism students recently returned from a five-day trip to New York City that began on May 30. From walking the Brooklyn Bridge to climbing the stairs to the crown of the Statue of Liberty and from the One World Observatory to the Edge, students We were so lucky to be able to take this amazing journey.

Off-duty accident claims life of sheriff’s deputy

The Van Zandt County Sheriff ’s Department is mourning the loss of a deputy who was killed in a two-vehicle accident June 11 on State Highway 198 near the Phalba Community in VZC. According to VZC Sheriff’s Department Deputy Erin Mc-Leaish, on Sunday, June 11, at approximately 4:14 p.m., Sgt.

Summer reading program underway at VZC Library

Activities for the 2023 Summer Reading Program at the Van Zandt County/ Sarah Norman Library in Canton were recently announced by library officials. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is ‘All Together Now: Unity, Friendship, and Kindness.’ Those attending the activities are asked to RSVP at 903-567-4276.
