Vandals outlast Brownsboro to open district play at home Sept. 23, 41-21

Breaking a two-game losing streak, the Van Vandals could not have picked a better time to get back in the win column as they broke open a tight game at halftime and raced past the Brownsboro Bears, 41-21, in the District 8-4A, Division 2, opener for both teams Sept. 23 at Van’s Memorial Stadium.

Indians continue shutout streak

The 2022 football season has taken plenty of twists and turns for county football teams since play began back on Aug. 26. Last week proved to be no exception as Canton returned to the win column, Edgewood stayed perfect on the young season, Grand Saline posted its second consecutive shutout, Wills Point took the field without head coach Tommy Poynter, Van suffering a rare lopsided defeat and Fruitvale missing game action entirely due to injury concerns within the program.

Lady Panthers edge past Wills Point Lady Tigers

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Wills Point Lady Tigers continued District 14-4A play last week, making the short trek to Quinlan for a matchup against the Ford Lady Panthers. Wills Point would come up short in the contest, narrowly winning the first set before falling to Ford 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20.

Eaglettes ace first two district tests

sports@vanzandtnews.com Canton players and coaches entered the season with a clear goal in mind, targeting a fast start during non-district play and another district title for the program. The Eaglettes easily reached their first goal, racing out of the gates with an 18-7 record while tangling against a slate of talented opponents throughout non-district.

I.T. James Stadium to be rededicated

In December of 1972, the Edgewood School Board voted to rename the football stadium after a person long affiliated with Edgewood Schools, Mr. I.T.

Lady Vandals improve to 3-0 in district

sports@vanzandtnews.com The Van Lady Vandal Vandals were the standard bearers among Van Zandt County volleyball programs in 2021, reaching the Regional Semifinals before bowing out to Celina. While the playoffs are still looming over the horizon, Van has looked sharp as ever since district play began, moving to 3-0 overall last week with convincing wins over both Athens and longtime rival Mabank.
