Kid Fish Day set for May 14

Canton’s Kid Fish Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14, on Two Acre Lake, located on Arnold Paul Road by the Canton Animal Shelter. Attendees are asked to bring their own tackle and gear this year, fishermen will be fishing for catfish. Hot dogs will be provided for those who attend. Fishing licenses are not needed for the event, as long as an adult has a child that they are helping fish.

Harold Lee Wright, best known by his nickname “Looter,” was born on Jan. 24, 1933, in Ben Wheeler, on Route 1 at his family’s homestead. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the age of 89, or what he called “plenty-nine.” Looter’s sense of humor and his appreciation for a good story will be missed.

Randall (Randy) Wade Johnson passed away April 16, 2022, at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. He was born on October 2, 1971, in Dallas, to parents, Afton “Buddy” Benton Johnson and Rita Cassandra Brown.

Janet Leigh Hahn (Forgey) passed away on April 16, 2022, at her home in Wills Point, after a long battle with cancer. She was raised in Independence, Missouri, where she was born on April 28, 1951, to Paul and Virginia Dickinson Forgey. She graduated from Van Horn High school in 1969. She had a long and successful career as a legal secretary, most recently as an office manager for Constangy, Smith, Brooks, and Prophete.

Vandals to enter playoffs as second seed

The Van Vandals clashed with a familiar foe April 29, battling with Brownsboro in a tiebreaker game to determine which team would enter this year’s playoffs as the top seed in District 14-4A play. Van and Brownsboro had met twice before with Van besting the Bears 14-12 back on March 29 and Brownsboro returning the favor with a 14-4 win over the Vandals April 14.

Three compete at Class 4A Region II Meet

County athletes representing Canton, Van and Wills Point made their way to the Texas A&M campus in Commerce April 29-30 to compete against one another and some of the top programs from across East Texas at the Class 4A Region II Meet.
Hannah Cade, a Class 4A State Track and Field Meet bronze medalist in the 100 meter hurdles in 2021, will make a return trip to Myers Stadium in Austin May 12-14 to compete in both the hurdles and pole vault. Lady Dogs fall to Gunter

The Edgewood Lady Dogs had their hands full last week, clashing with Gunter in bi-district playoff round action. Gunter took advantage of two strong pitching performances to sweep past the Lady Dogs and into the Area round.
