1937-2024

A graveside service for Virgil Alvis Pierce, 87, of Canton, Texas was held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Cool Springs Cemetery in Van Zandt County with Bro. Max Callahan officiating. Virgil went home to the Lord on May 16, 2024. He was born on February 23, 1937, in the Wentworth Community of Van Zandt County, to William Leon Pierce and Gladys Christene Foster Pierce.

Virgil grew up in the Tundra and Canton area. He was the oldest of six children. Virgil graduated from Canton High School in 1956. Virgil served his country in the Navy from 1960 to 1962 as a sailor of USS Wasp, an Essex-class aircraft carrier that was involved in the Bay of Pigs standoff/blockade in 1961. Virgil was proud to have served his country. He retired from Amoco Oil and then went on to pursue his passion for classic cars as a car dealer with Pierce Classics at the intersection of Highways 64 and 19.

Virgil never met a stranger and loved to make a deal. Virgil shared his love and enthusiasm for cars with all. Whether it was car talk or nostalgic talks about the 50s, Virgil was the expert. Virgil enjoyed visiting and driving all over the Hill country, but his best days were spent with his sons, grandchildren, and family. Virgil will be dearly missed, but he will live on in the hearts and memories of all that knew and loved him. When you see a classic car in all its glory, think of Virgil and smile.

Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, William and Gladys Pierce.

He is survived by his sons: Kevin Pierce; Kyle Pierce and spouse, Susan; Kirk Pierce and spouse, Danielle; grandchildren: Jonathan Pierce and spouse, Nikki; Blair Hesskew and spouse, Destry; Mason Pierce, Merek Pierce, and Maryn Pierce; six great grandchildren; siblings: JoAnn Robertson, Dorisene Groves, Marcie Nix and spouse, Jerry; Dale Pierce and spouse, Jimmie; Niki Pierce; and a host of other family and friends.

Virgil’s final resting place was at Cool Springs Cemetery alongside his parents.
