Shirley Ann Woods, 84, of Canton, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021. She was born on April 6, 1937, in Wise Community to Alex Barnes and Ruby Hilliard Barnes.

Shirley grew up in the Van Zandt County area and was a devoted supporter of the Whitton community during her adult life. She was a member of the Whitton Church of Christ and enjoyed attending service and any gathering the church had to bring the community together in spirit. Shirley loved to quilt and was also a member of the Whitton Volunteer Fire Department and each year would help raise money by donating her “famous coconut pies” that are still a well-guarded secret to this very day. Shirley had perfected those pies working at several restaurants through the years and when anyone walked in, saw them waiting there for dessert, everyone knew Shirley was working that day that she had made those pies, they always disappeared faster than she could make more.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, William E. Gill; parents, Alex and Ruby Barnes; brother, Edward and two sisters, Dorothy and Pete.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Woods, and wife, Sarabeth, Michael Gill and wife, Katherine; William Gill; daughter, Cindy Gill; grandchildren, Misty Dawn Gill, Rebecca Loraine Gill, Kelli Renee Gill, Jerry Johnson, Van Woods, Catrina Bragg, Cody Bragg, Chad Gill, James Gill, Holly Gill and Heather Hill; great-grandchild, Jacoby and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021, at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton with Bro. David Fretwell officiating.
