John Melvin Womack, 90, passed away on Oct. 15, 2021, at Magnolia, after a brief illness. He was born in Hartnett County, North Carolina, and was the son of Eugene Clifford Womack and Nancy Sharpe Womack.

He graduated from Elon College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He worked first for General Electric Company where he won awards for and holds patents for developing electrolytic capacitor processing. He then transferred to Taiwan where he built a plant to manufacture these capacitors. He later was Director of Engineering for DuPont Taiwan Limited. During this time, he built and managed four manufacturing plants. After retiring, he moved to Texas and became a lifelong Master Gardener. He set up the first community horticultural club in Sun City.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Edith McCauley Womack, who died in 2005.

He is survived by his daughter, Ellen Kay Womack; son, John David Womack and grandchildren, Skyler Womack and Abby, Brianna Womack, Zachary Pride, and Zoe Pride. He is also survived by his partner of 15 years, Sandra Rosen. He was one of eight children and is survived by his brother, Graham Womack and Lora, and Shirley Holmes and Joe of North Carolina.

A funeral service will be held at Klein Funeral Home at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 30. Interment will be at Cameron Grove Cemetery in Sanford, North Carolina. Time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas.
