Jesse Edward Newton, Sr. (Edward), was born August 6, 1928, in the Tundra Community to Jesse Albert and Nona Mae Newton. His childhood was spent in Canton and Tundra. Edward married Imogene Joyce Rowan, the love of his life, November 9, 1946. Jesse Edward Newton, Jr. (Eddie), their only child, was born on January 12, 1948.

The family moved from Canton to Dallas in 1951 and resided there for 39 years. Edward soon began his training in agronomy which led to his career as a renowned golf course superintendent in the Dallas/North Texas Area. He was employed by Glen Lakes Country Club in Dallas for many years and in 1991 retired from Las Colinas Country Club in Irving. During his tenure as a golf course superintendent, Edward was awarded ‘Superintendent of the Year’more than once for the North Texas Chapter of Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He was also given recognition as a distinguished superintendent among his peers.

Upon his retirement, he and Imogene returned to Canton, building a home, and settling into the leisure lifestyle of East Texas. Edward took pride working in his beautifully inspired, manicured ‘golf/green’ yard well into his mid-80s. He also owned and operated, along with his son, Eddie, the Newton Tree Farm during his retirement years.

Edward was a son, brother, DEVOTED husband, father, uncle, father-in-law and grandfather. Following the competitive golf journey of his two grandsons, Jesse Edward Newton, III, (Tres) and Brian, gave him pride and joy. He also enjoyed playing his own game of golf especially during the father/son and father/son/grandson tournaments. He LOVED Gospel, Country Western music, and the Grand Ole Opry, traveling to Tennessee often and stopping at EVERY Cracker Barrel along the way!

Edward was a member of Walnut Springs Bible Baptist Church where he was blessed with many friendships. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him. Edward passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024, at the age of 95 at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Before his death, he resided at The Villages of Lake Highlands where his caregivers showed compassion, concern, and loving care for which we, as his family, will be forever grateful. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Billy Joe, and his loving wife, Imogene. He is survived by his DEVOTED son, Eddie Newton; daughter-in-law, Becky Newton; grandsons: Tres and wife, Paige, and Brian; several nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; and a host of friends.

Funeral service was held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton. Interment was at Haven of Memories. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be sent to Walnut Springs Bible Baptist Church, 4280 FM RD 2909, Canton,Texas 75103.
