A funeral service for Elizabeth “Joy” Chaney, 87, of Canton, was held Nov. 13, 2021, at First Baptist Church of Canton with Mickey Matlock officiating, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home.

Joy went home to the Lord on Nov. 7, 2021, in Canton. She was born on July 24, 1934, in Myrtle Springs, to Edmund Henderson and Clara Adams Henderson.

Joy grew up in the Van Zandt County area. She attended Myrtle Springs School and later graduated from Canton High School. Joy married her true love, Berkley “Chick” Chaney on Aug. 25, 1951. The couple had 63 beautiful years together. While Chick was in the Air Force, the couple lived in San Marcos and then Austin. Joy received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from East Texas State University. She taught in Elmo and later at Canton ISD as a first grade teacher for 27 years. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Canton. Joy had served on the Canton ISD school board of trustees from 1997 to 2006. Joy was a large contributor to the renovation and building of the auditorium for the Canton Eagle Band. Joy enjoyed traveling, reading and entertaining. Everyone referred to the Chaney house as the Chaney Chapel because so many friends married at the house and Joy enjoyed fixing up the house and serving refreshments to all. Joy was a giving person and she even opened up the house to strangers when Chick was working on their car. She was active in many clubs and groups including the Community Theater, where she acted and directed, the Mathea Guild, Wednesday Study Club and Friends of the Library. Joy’s one wish was “love one another, but most of all love Jesus Christ”. Joy had a home filled with love and laughter and was known as “Mi Mi” by her family and friends. She loved the Lord, her family and spending time with grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Clara Henderson; beloved husband, Chick Chaney; daughter-in-law, Samantha Chaney; sister, Shirley Henderson; brothers, Ike Henderson and Felix Henderson. Joy is survived by her sons, Tim Chaney and Tracy Chaney; grandsons, Terence Chaney and Stephen Chaney; great-grandchildren, Luke, Landon, Skylar and Sloane and many other relatives and friends.

Interment was in Haven of Memories Cemetery.
