The members of the Van Zandt County Genealogy and Local History Library met Saturday Aug. 28,. at the Van Zandt County Sarah Norman Library, on Highway 859, in Canton.

The program speaker was the well-known to the Genealogy World and across the nation was Mayor John Sellers, of Sulphur Springs. His program “Moving On Down the Road Again,” gave insight to look in places you have not thought of and to expect sometimes very interesting findings you do not expect. Example - Grandpaw was a Baptist...What? “He was baptized an Episcopal!” Try to visit your ancestral homeplace and walk the ground you ancestors walked and worked.

Genealogy Society President Carrie Wolverton spoke on the 40th Genealogy Seminar, set for Sept. 25 at 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Farm Bureau meeting center in Canton. The speaker for the day will be Mary Nell Bryant, retired schoolteacher and renowned genealogy speaker and researcher. Topics will be, “Relatively Speaking: Don’t Neglect the Collateral Lines, Counting Cousins in the County, War of 1812 Records and Resources, and Connecting Autosomal DNA Matches for Great Grandfather’s Four Families. Quill and Scrawl, (question and answers) – as time permits.” Members attending fee is $40 and non-members $55. A light breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack, with beverages will be included along with other events.

The Genealogy Library, along with the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, have partnered to sponsor a grave marker dedication ceremony for John Meeks, Veteran of the War of 1812, at 2 p.m., Sept. 12, in Carter Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas. The public is invited to attend.
