First day of Early voting numbers released

Nearly 1,400 votes were cast on the first day of Early Voting at the two Early Voting locations Oct. 19, according to numbers released by Van Zandt County Elections Coordinator Shannon Maddox.

Turnout was strong on the first day of Early Voting in Van Zandt County on Oct. 19. There are two Early Voting locations including the new VZC Courthouse Annex building (formerly known as the Paul Michael Building) at 1900 North Trades Day Blvd. in Canton (State Highway 19). Three children killed in structure fire in Canton

Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Kevin Palmer released the following information regarding a structure fire that killed three children in Canton early Oct. 21.

Three children lost their lives in a structure fire early in the morning on Oct. 21 in the Canton area. A fourth child and an adult were taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire was unknown at press time. Photo by Melody Tarno-Thompson

Missing man found deceased following search

Correspondent A 77-year-old man was found deceased earlier this week following a multi-day effort to locate him. According to information shared by the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Department, George Murphy was reported missing at approximately 3 p.m.

VZC sheriff’s deputy killed

Van Zandt County Sheriff Kevin Bridger released the following information on Oct. 20 regarding the shooting that killed a VZC Sheriff’s Department Deputy and injured a Canton Police Department Officer.

Van Zandt County is mourning the loss of a VZC Sheriff’s Deputy that was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 20. The deputy, along with a Canton Police Department officer, were in the process of serving a warrant at a residence on State Highway 198 when they were shot at the residence.
