For the second time in a two-week period, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court took no action on a request for increased salaries covering 29 positions in the VZC Sheriff’s Department. After appearing before the commissioners’ court March 15, VZC Sheriff Joe Carter returned to make the same request March 29.

A Canton man has been sentenced to federal prison for drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston March 30.

Van ISD Director of Curriculum/Accountability Karla Rainey presented the school district’s Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) for the 202122 school year during a public hearing March 27 as part of the regular monthly Van School Board meeting.

This year, 2023, marks the 150th anniversary of the first burial in Union Chapel Cemetery. The anniversary will be celebrated at the cemetery’s annual Decoration Day on April 28, 2023.

The next meeting for Republican Women of Van Zandt is scheduled for Monday, April 10 at the Van Zandt County Library located at 317 First Monday Lane in Canton. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting to being promptly at 6 p.m.
