Bachert committing to Cameron University

Van Lady Vandal basketball is proud to announce that 5’7” senior point guard Mikyla Bachert will be accepting a full scholarship from Cameron University. She will sign her National Letter of Intent with the Lawton, Oklahoma university during an early signing ceremony at VHS on Nov. 9 at 10:30 a.m.

Rainy weather makes presence known

Mother Nature proved to be less than kind during the 10th week of the season, delivering rainy and windy conditions as teams continued to make their final pushes for a spot in this year’s postseason. Despite those challenges Edgewood notched a key win last week, continuing to generate momentum with bi-district round play looming.

Lady Dogs fend off Blue Ridge in thriller

Van Zandt County volleyball programs showed plenty of grit on the court during the bi-district round of the playoffs with three teams, Canton, Edgewood and Van, all turning in impres- Canton The Canton Eaglettes were the class of the field in District 16-4A this season, posting a perfect 12-0 record against a schedule that included Athens, Brownsboro, Cumberland Academy, Lindale, Mabank and Van. As the top finishers in a loaded district, the Eaglettes were paired against a Paris squad that finished fourth overall in District 15-4A this season.

Edgewood Halloween Carnival draws big crowd

The 48th annual Edgewood Halloween Carnival, hosted by Edgewood ISD and the City of Edgewood, was recently held with a good crowd on hand. The theme of the carnival this year was ‘Haunted on the Highway.’ Those attending the carnival ate cotton candy at the sophomore booth, took a hayride sponsored by the freshmen class, smashed a car provided by the GT Challengers, played a couple of rounds of cornhole with the middle school, and bounced in the elementary GT bounce houses.

The Texas A&M Forest Service reminds Texans to be careful with activities that may cause a wildfire this hunting season. From 2017 to 2021, Texas A&M Forest Service responded to 3,682 wildfires burning 1.4 million acres.

American Carp Society to host Mill Creek Cup

Next week will see the commencement of the fourth annual Mill Creek Cup event, hosted by the American Carp Society, in Canton. Forty specialist carp anglers will be traveling from various states across the country to participate in the event that offers prizes and merchandise to placing teams. The City of Canton has been the gracious host of the event since its inception, as Mill Creek Lake is the home to a number of very special fish that attract anglers from all regions of the country who specialize in the sport.
