Lewis Eugene “Gene” Stone, 97, passed away on January 28, 2024, in Grand Saline. Born on November 7, 1926, in Mineral Springs, Arkansas, Gene spent over five decades as a cherished resident of Colfax. He seamlessly became an integral part of the community, earning friendships with everyone he encountered. Gene was a dedicated member of the Colfax Baptist Church for many years before recently joining the Colfax United Methodist Church.

Additionally, he was an esteemed Mason, proudly associated with the Colfax Masonic Lodge. During his service in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, Gene served as a seaman first class on the USS Greenling submarine.

Following his military service, he embarked on a career with Greyhound, driving buses until his initial retirement at the age of 55. Not content to rest, Gene continued to drive tour buses for various establishments, including Lone Star Coaches, well into his 80s.

Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Dura Davis, and two children, Tamara Stokes and Jerry Hampton.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Bobbie Sue Stone of Colfax, three grandchildren, Sarah Stokes, Matthew Hampton, and Andrew Hampton, as well as cousins Linda Webb and Donna Ramsey. His impact is also reflected in the countless friends who will fondly remember him.

A celebration of Gene’s remarkable life will be held at a later date, providing an opportunity for friends and family to honor and commemorate the legacy he leaves behind.
