Sirmans found safe in Kentucky after Amber Alert issued

Grand Saline teenager Willow Sirmans, 14, has been located in Louisville, Kentucky, after an Amber Alert was issued May 13. Sirmans was initially reported as a runaway May 12, but further evidence led to the issuance of the Amber Alert after additional information was obtained pursuant to the investigation.

Virus count reaches 25

Van Zandt County now has a total count of 25 of confi rmed COVID-19 cases as of May 19. The Northeast Texas Public Health District also released that out of the 25, 14 of them are in the recovery phase. In Van Zandt County, Canton has the highest number of cases at seven. Van has six cases; Wills Point, six cases; Grand Saline, two cases; Edgewood, two cases; Murchison and Chandler each have one. The only death related to the virus was in Murchison.

Online service for Memorial Day scheduled

The Veterans Memorial will hold a Live Facebook virtual ceremony with the raising of the American fl ag and playing of TAPS on Memorial Day, May 25. The fl ag will be lowered at sunrise on Memorial Day and raised at noon. “Due to COVID-19, the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial board decided not to hold the annual Memorial Day event on the Plaza this year. PR Director Phil Smith and Treasurer, Board Member Dan Maucieri, will broadcast live on Facebook at Canton resident and recent Baylor graduate Spencer Pennington will follow with the playing of TAPS. Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for everyone who has died serving in the American armed forces. Please honor all veterans on Memorial Day. Fly your fl ag proudly, volunteer and please donate to the Veterans Memorial,” stated VZC Vets Memorial offi cials. This ceremony will be conducted virtually only, to comply with state and federal guidelines for social-distancing
