Joe Williams’ long life ended peacefully in his home with his family Monday, May 18, 2020, at the age of 92.
Willie Joe Williams was born May 13, 1928, to Willie B. Williams and Ethie Reece Williams in Martin’s Mill. He graduated high school from Martin’s Mill in 1946, and then moved to Dallas to help his father doing carpenter work. He was an entrepreneur, salesman, carpenter, businessman, general jack of all trades and a self-made man. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He served on the Martin’s Mill Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1975. He was a lifelong member of the Martin’s Mill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and song leader for many years.
Following the war, Joe worked for Gulf Oil for five years. He then started Williams Construction in Dallas where he built homes for 25 years. Then purchased a Chevrolet Dealership in Mabank, which later became Williams Chevrolet Buick, where he bought and sold cars for 25 years. Joe then retired to devote full time to his family farm.
In 1949, Joe married Sue Helen Buford, and they had a long and happy marriage of 70 years. Joe and Sue raised two wonderful children, Keith and Tanna. Throughout his life, he loved his family and many close friends.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Sue of Martin’s Mill; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Karen Williams of Martin’s Mill; daughter and son-in-law, Tanna and Carlos Remedios of Arlington; very special close friend, Carlos Morales of Martin’s Mill; granddaughter, Tiffany Whitus of Martin’s Mill; grandson and wife, Ryan and Amanda Williams of Martin’s Mill; granddaughter and husband, Lynzi and Tommy Edwards of Gilmer; grandson, Colby Remedios of Arlington; granddaughter, Kendra Remedios of Arlington; seven great-grandchildren, Braleigh and Paisleigh Whitus, Aubrey and Krew Williams, Deyton, Andi and Ripp Edwards; sister, Marguerite McEvoy; sister-in-law, Maurine Lowrie; nieces and nephews, Denny McEvoy, Kay and Gordon Grubbs, Randy and Brandi Shapiro, and Debbie and Coy Dodd; and many other beloved relatives and friends.
Mr. Williams is preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Pete Fancher; brother-in-law, Bruce Lowrie; and in-laws, Aubrey and Mattie Buford, and longtime friend, David McAdams.
Services were held Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton with Bro. Lee Welch officiating. Interment was in Holly Springs Cemetery in Martin’s Mill.
