Local Van Zandt County veteran Lewis Clem volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps from February 1956 through 1960. “I was not doing all that well in school,” said Lewis sitting on his porch at his home in Ben Wheeler. “I liked their uniforms. I had two brothers in the military, Royce was in the Army and Harold was in the Air Force. We were working in the cotton fields in Whitewright, Texas (near Bonham) and my cousin James Cunningham urged me to sign up with him, so I did.”
